Your Children Have Eyes and Ears

Parents are role models. Most parents try to set positive examples for their children and spend much of their time trying to coach their children to become honest and trustworthy adults. However, when going through a divorce, many parents are so focused on “winning” the divorce that they forget about how the divorce will impact the children.

Regardless of how secretive the parents are, the children are always aware of what is going on during the divorce. Children are very perceptive. Even when parents love each other, when they fight, it affects the children. And the more the parents are fighting, the more it negatively affects the children.

Studies show that divorce always has an impact on the children. How much of an impact is determined by the parents. Despite the divorce, parents can make a commitment to continue to co-parent the children, to discuss the divorce with the children together and to have the children speak with a therapist, if necessary.

By resolving their divorce amicably, parents can continue to set examples for the children and can reassure the children that the parents are not divorcing because of the children and that both parents will still actively be involved in the lives of the children.

Methods such as collaborative divorce and mediation can be very effective in minimizing the dissent related to the children and can help the parents begin the process of co-parenting after the divorce.
